This chlorine sanitizes your pool water, killing algae and bacteria. Like any component with moving parts or electrical functions, the electrolytic cell within the IC20 has a finite lifespan. Over several years of operation, mineral scale can build up on the plates, reducing their surface area and their ability to generate sufficient chlorine. Additionally, the plates themselves can degrade over time from constant electrical current and chemical exposure, eventually failing to produce any chlorine at all. This degradation is a natural part of the product's lifecycle, typically requiring cell replacement every 3-7 years depending on usage and water chemistry maintenance. If the IntelliChlor IC20 cell fails and is not replaced, you will lose your primary method of automatic chlorine generation.
