Details
The union connector on your Hayward TriStar SP3200X Series Pump is designed to provide a convenient and secure way to connect and disconnect the plumbing from the pump. This allows for easier maintenance and servicing of the pump itself. However, like many components exposed to pool water and environmental factors, the parts within this union kit, specifically the gasket and the plastic nut and connector, are susceptible to wear and tear over time. The gasket can become brittle, cracked, or compressed, losing its sealing ability. The plastic components, while durable, can also develop hairline cracks or become warped from constant pressure and temperature fluctuations.
Failure of this union connector kit can lead to significant issues for your pool system. The most obvious symptom is leaking water around the pump's inlet or outlet connections. This not only wastes water but can also allow air to be drawn into the system, causing the pump to lose prime and significantly reduce water circulation. If left unaddressed, a persistent leak can also lead to corrosion of the pump's motor or damage to the surrounding pool equipment pad. Replacing the entire kit, which includes the nut, connector, and gasket, is the most effective way to ensure a complete seal and restore proper function to your Hayward pump.

Pro Tip
When tightening the union nut, hand-tighten first and then give it a quarter to half turn with a wrench. Overtightening can strip the threads or crack the plastic, while under-tightening will cause leaks.
