The seal plate in your Hayward TriStar SP3200X Series Pump is designed to house the pump shaft seal and act as a primary water barrier between the pump's wet end (where water enters and exits) and the motor. Its main function is to keep water contained within the plumbing system and away from the electrical components of the motor, which would cause catastrophic failure. The seal plate itself is typically made of durable plastic, but the critical sealing surfaces and the O-ring that seals it to the motor can wear out over time. Failure of the SPX3200E seal plate often occurs due to the degradation of its internal O-ring or the seal itself. Constant exposure to pool chemicals, high temperatures, and the abrasive nature of circulating water can cause the rubber components to harden, crack, or lose their elasticity. When this happens, water can begin to seep past the seal plate, usually manifesting as a drip or steady stream of water from the front of the pump, near the motor.
